In the early 1800s, Georgia was rapidly growing as a state and as a result, Marietta quickly became an important city in Georgia. In 1833, the Georgia Railroad was opened which connected Marietta with the Atlantic Ocean port of Savannah. Six years later, a second railroad connecting Chattanooga to Atlanta was finished and made Marietta even more accessible. The city continued to grow and in 1892, the Marietta Square was created.

The square was originally developed in the early 1800s and has been a popular destination for locals and tourists alike ever since. Today, Marietta Square is home to a variety of businesses, restaurants, and attractions, including the Marietta Museum of History. No matter what you're looking for, Marietta Square is sure to have something to offer.

Attractions And Amenities In Marietta Square

  • One of the most popular attractions in the square is the Big Chicken. This famous six-story chicken restaurant has been a landmark in Marietta for decades, and is still going strong.
  • Another attraction is The Big Red Wagon – a venue that hosts events such as dances and weddings – which was built out of an old horse-drawn hearse carriage after it had been used to transport the body of a deceased woman named Mary.
  • The Marietta Farmers Market is held weekly at the square, where you can purchase fresh produce directly from local farmers, as well as prepared foods and arts & crafts. Many of the vendors are also available at other local markets throughout the week.
  • For visitors who want to explore Atlanta by foot, public transportation is easily accessible from the square. The Marietta Streetcar links to both the Marta and free shuttle buses that go around downtown Atlanta.
  • The square is also home to a variety of restaurants and bars, as well as a few small businesses. While it may not be as big or popular as some of Atlanta's other squares, Marietta Square offers a charming and more intimate setting for those looking to experience the city.

If you wish to visit Marietta Square, it is located at the intersection of Roswell and Cherokee Streets in Atlanta. Parking is available in the area, and there are also several pay garages nearby. The square is open daily from dawn to dusk.
