Dr. King's father acquired it in 1930 as a house for his family of four children. His father died shortly afterwards, leaving Dr. King and his mother to live with two other family members. He earned a bachelor's degree from Morehouse College in 1948 and began his career as pastor of Atlanta's Salem Baptist Church. He established his message of nonviolence while preaching.
