History of Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthplace was constructed in 1894 by his father as a family house. The home was later converted into a log cabin and rented out to local families. Dr. King's father acquired it in 1930 as a house for his family of four children. His father died shortly afterwards, leaving Dr. King and his mother to live with two other family members. He earned a bachelor's degree from Morehouse College in 1948 and began his career as pastor of Atlanta's Salem Baptist Church. He established his message of nonviolence while preaching. He enrolled in the Morehouse School of Medicine following some disagreement within the church.
