Piedmont Park is an urban park in Atlanta, Georgia, about one mile northeast of Downtown and sandwiched between the Midtown and Virginia Highland districts. Originally, Dr. Benjamin Walker owned the land and utilized it as an out-of-town gentleman's farm and house.

History of Piedmont Park

Dr. Walker purchased the site for $150,000 in 1887 with the intention of developing it into a peaceful getaway for affluent families seeking a pleasant place to play. The land, on the other hand, was in desperate need of cultivation and restoration, which had not occurred since the Civil War.

Walker added a greenhouse, a blacksmith shop, a watering trough, and the East Lake swimming hole to Piedmont Park in 1896. After ten years, the park remained neglected, with trees falling, wells leaking, and insufficient upkeep. In 1905, the park was designated a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places, enabling for repairs and the construction of fences and gates.

Admission Fees And Working Hours

Piedmont Park is open daily from sunrise to dark, but hours vary on holidays and during significant events. Permits are necessary to get to the summit of the Stone Mountain Bridge, the park's most famous tourist attraction.

You can visit the park as early as 7:00 a.m. and remain until sunset throughout the bulk of the year. However, due to Piedmont Park's distinctive topography, it is recommended that you enter the area only if you want to hike one of the park's several paths.

On Saturdays and Sundays, when the park attracts thousands of visitors, the admission cost increases to $13 (one-way), $17 (two-way), and $20 (all-day), with the park open from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. The park opens at 8:00 a.m. on weekdays and significant holidays.

Why Should You Visit Piedmont Park

Residents of the city may select from a range of public leisure facilities and parks, including Lakewood Park, Virginia Highland Park, Holmes Mill Park, Downtown Atlanta BeltLine Park, City Park, and Lakewood Park. However, none match Piedmont Park's 400 acres of undulating hills and magnificent trees.

Piedmont Park has been dubbed the "garden of Eden" of the city. That may be an exaggeration, but it is an absolutely stunning piece of nature. On a Saturday afternoon, you may walk, picnic, and enjoy the park's quiet and solitude. On the two miles of paved walkways, you may also ride a bicycle, rollerblade, or skateboard.
