Zoo Atlanta (alternatively referred to as Atlanta Zoo) is a zoological park in Atlanta, Georgia that is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). Raymond B. King is the current President and CEO of Zoo Atlanta. By 1984, the Atlanta zoo had fallen into disrepair and was considered among the country's ten worst zoos. By 2000, it had undergone extensive restructuring and earned a spot on the top ten list.

History of Zoo Atlanta

The Zoo of the South, Atlanta's first zoo, opened on Macon Road in 1873. The zoo began as an animal preserve and zoo in the nineteenth century and has grown to include a zoo, dancing pavilion, and café. The Atlanta Zoological Society bought the zoo in 1892, making it Georgia's second public zoo and the second in the United States to be held by a public city. In 1898, Atlanta's newly formed municipal government assumed responsibility for the zoo's administration. Numerous exhibits from the previous Atlanta Zoo of the South are still on display at Zoo Atlanta.

The zoo was renamed the Atlanta Zoo and Conservatory in 1927, and the conservatory was closed. The zoo was established as Zoo Atlanta a decade later and became a private, non-profit organization.

Where Is The Zoo Atlanta Located?

The zoo is located at 1585 Wouts Road in Atlanta, Georgia, but is also easily accessible through the I-285 Southeast Beltline. The zoo is just a 25-minute drive from downtown Atlanta.

What Is The Entrance Fee For Zoo Atlanta?

Zoo Atlanta admission is $23 for adults, $18 for children under the age of 12, and free for children under the age of three. Children under the age of two enter for free when accompanied by a paid adult.

Shopping in Zoo Atlanta

Greensboro Strip is Zoo Atlanta's main retail street. This neighborhood is densely packed with stores and restaurants, as well as a movie theater. Additionally, the Zoo is within walking distance of an Atlanta Metro Airport Train stop. Numerous Chinese eateries are located in the Chinatown neighborhood. The Most Dangerous Animal Museum is located on the rear side of the Zoo for visitors with an adventurous spirit. The museum is a true museum, including a variety of weird and unusual creatures.
